Ways To Overcome Gym Anxiety

Posted In: Fitness, Mindset

Does the thought of going to the gym terrify you? It might make you feel inadequate and unable to do the exercises properly, so you worry people will laugh at you. Along those lines, you might worry about what you’ll look like in gym clothes if you’re overweight. There are many reasons for gym anxiety. You can overcome it if you identify it and why you have it.

Do you need to be the best at everything you do?

If you’re out of shape, you probably know you won’t be the fittest person in the gym. You could start working out at home until you feel you’re ready. The problem with that is there will always be someone fitter. You can schedule private sessions with a personal trainer until you get fitter or accept you aren’t the fittest, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be someday.

Are you ashamed of your body or your fitness level?’

You worry someone will notice that you’re overweight or unable to lift even the lightest weight. Just like the person who needs to be the best, you need to understand that everyone in that gym started somewhere and was far less fit than they are right now. Most people won’t notice since they’re more focused on their workout.

Are you worried you won’t know what to do?

That’s one area you don’t have to worry about when you come to ISC. Our coaches help you with a program that builds your confidence as you strengthen your body. You don’t have to feel like you’re trailing behind everyone since they base your program on your fitness level. You don’t have to design your workout. They do it for you. They show you how to do each exercise and watch to ensure you’ve done it correctly.

Are you coming back from an injury or serious condition? People coming back after being injured or something as serious as a heart attack often are afraid to exercise. Always check with your healthcare professional before you start again. Let your fitness coach know the situation.

  • You can overcome gym anxiety by gathering information first. Take a tour of the gym and talk to the coaches. Let them know your reluctance. They can provide reassurance or a solution that will reduce your fear.
  • If you aren’t ready to be the new person at the gym, why not go with a friend? Having someone to talk to who is also just starting can empower you. You can draw strength from numbers and figure things out together.
  • Make it easier by going at a time when it’s not crowded, so fewer people will see you. If that’s not possible, then push yourself to go. You’ll feel uncomfortable the first few times, but it will get easier the more you’re there.
